Roatan is famous for its reefs and its sunsets, but there is a quiet Greek table on the island worth crossing the water for. Here are five dishes that capture what we do best.
1. Slow-roasted lamb (kleftiko)
Wrapped tight and cooked low for hours until it falls off the bone, our kleftiko is seasoned with mountain oregano and lemon. It is the dish we are best known for, and the one that sells out first on a busy night.
2. Grilled local catch, Greek style
We take whatever the boats bring in that morning and grill it simply, with olive oil, lemon, and a little sea salt. Caribbean fish, Aegean technique.
3. Real Greek salad
No lettuce. Just ripe tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, peppers, olives, and a thick slab of feta under a generous pour of oil.
4. Saganaki
Pan-seared cheese, flamed at the table, finished with lemon. It is theatre and comfort food at once.
5. Loukoumades
Honey-soaked dough puffs dusted with cinnamon and walnuts. Order them to share, then order a second plate when nobody wants to share.
